Spartanburg defeated Clover 42-28 in the first round of the South Carolina 5A High School Football Playoffs. 1st Mission Accomplished.
2nd Mission…The Laurens Raiders. Laurens who are 7-4 Overall and finished 4-1 in Region 2 – 5A. Laurens is averaging 30 points per game on offense while giving up 26 points pergame. The lone region loss was to Mauldin 29-22. Laurens recorded wins over Hillcrest,Wade Hampton,Riverside and Greenwood.Out of region The Raiders defeated Irmo while dropping games to Clinton,Chapman,Dorman and Boiling Springs.
Laurens Quarterback Ryan Campbell seems to be an Athletic QB with a good arm.The Running Back name is Troy Dendy. I can only assume he from that same Dendy bloodline that has fed the Raiders for decades.
Another player of note is SHRINE BOWL Offensive Lineman SUMMIE CARLAY. The 6’5 270 pound South Carolina commit leads the way in the trenches. While he didn’t divulge too much information, he did say, “I can tell you that we know Spartanburg is a very good team.”
According to scprepfootballhistory.com Laurens has never beat Spartanburg. The 1977 Quarter Final game to the 2013 Non Region matchup,Spartanburg has outscored Laurens 133-72 through the five meetings. The average final score is 26.6 to 14.7.
This past week Laurens beat Woodmont 35-7 here is the game recap from “MIKE’S SPORT REPORT from WLBG
- Laurens 35 – Woodmont 7… Bow it was better news for Laurens Raider football fans as they defeated Woodmont 35-7 at KC Hanna Stadium last Friday night to advance to the second round of the Class AAAAA Playoffs against Spartanburg this Friday night… Both teams looked a little out of synch ion the first half as the 3 weeks off (4 in Woodmont’s case) seemed to have an effect on the teams but Laurens led 14-7 at the half on a pair of TD passes from Ryan Campbell to Demond Cunningham (5 yards) and Aaron McCloud (36 yards)… A note here: Cunningham recovered two Raider fumbles in the game to keep drives alive and the ball away from the Wildcats…The Wildcats lone TD cam in the closing moments of the first half after they blocked a Raider punt and then drove 30 yards for the score… The second half was all Raiders…The Raiders scored first after the Wildcats muffed a punt reception and Tyzay Hill recovered and the Raiders set up shop at the Wildcat 28 yard line… The Drive ended 7 plays later when Campbell scored for 2 yards on 4th and 1 AT THE Wildcat 2 yard line… Devin Hubner added the PAT to make it 21-7… After the game Campbell said he actually handed the ball to Hunter Medlin as he was going down and Hunter scored… The Raider defense then held Woodmont to 3 and out and the Raiders then mounted a 48 yard drive with DQ Flout scoring from 13 yards out to make the score 28-7 after PAT just before the end of the third quarter… Early in the final quarter Woodmont drove to the Raider 21 yard line before turning the ball over on downs… The Raiders then drove 79 yards in just 5 plays with the score coming on a 46 yard run by Troy Dendy… With Hubner’s PAT the Raiders led 35-7 with 6:17 left in the contest… The Wildcats then picked up one first down but were forced to punt and the Raiders took over on their own 19 yard line and the subs took over… Duane Martin had at least 5 rushes to put the Raiders at the Wildcat 2 yard line with a first and goal to go… The raiders elected to run a couple of “Victory Kneels” to run out the clock and get their first playoff win in 8 years…. For those of you not following along..Laurens is good. They have weapons and coaching. Head Coach Chris Liner was the head coach at Ninety Six High School for six years. He was 43-26 at Ninety Six and took the Wildcats to the AA playoffs each season. He also spent 11 years as an assistant at Greenwood High School under legendary coach and Laurens native Shell Dula. He served as offensive coordinator for seven years.During his 11 years at Greenwood, the Eagles won nine region championships and three state championships.
The Raiders, much like Spartanburg played a tough non region schedule to prepare for a tough region which led them to a Number One seed. Hard work got them where they are.It is no fluke that we are traveling to K.C. Hanna Stadium to face a multiple time State Champion.
Spartanburg Standout Wide Receiver Romain Kelly who had 5 catches for 108 yards and a Touchdown against Clover in the first round, spoke to me about Laurens,”This week is about learning the “ins and outs” of Laurens. They have some really good defensive players and it’s gonna be up to us as players to come to practice dialed in to our coaches and scout team so we can put ourselves in the best possible position to play well on Friday.”
All in all,Friday should be what it is all about. A second round game between two historic programs. Spartanburg vs. Laurens. The Vikings and The Raiders. A date with Westside Or Dorman is up for grabs…
So on this Thanksgiving..I am thankful for Lisa Michelle, our kids, our friends and THE SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL VIKINGS.
