From (in my opinion the greatest overall musician ever),PRINCE and his dirge Purple Rain to BROOK BENTON’s “Rainy Night In Georgia”, the echo of THE EURYTHMICS “Here Comes The Rain Again” all the way to ANN PEEBLES 1973 classic “I Can’t Stand The Rain”

For a good many of us one of these songs has popped into our Brain today..ok,ok..It may be Rhianna with Umbrella or Kentucky Rain by The King himself Elvis,..once again Rain has cancelled this event.
It’s almost a “catch-22” situation,You can tear up your field and risk an injury or keep everyone safe and “practice” in another way..weight room, film room,classroom..”we are talking about practice” Mr. Iverson.
Clinton, Union, Gaffney, 2 Laurens, Ware Shoals and 2 Spartanburg teams were set to compete in something Coach Webb was looking forward to,”What we have to find in these 7 on 7’s is a QB. We have a few guys that are talented at different things, but have to find 1 that can be the man.”
He continued,”We have a good group coming back. 4 starters on the OL and our 2 leading rushers, Kris Holmes and Mark Wise.We feel like we have a chance to be pretty good on offense”.
The Red Devils leading wide receiver Aaron Copeland had 50 catches for 600 yards and Elijah Campbell is a rising Jr that will catch your eye at wideout as well. Coach Webb also mentioned how much the 7 on 7 helps the defense. “we return 1 corner (Tquan Cromer) and our FS (Vilo Boyd). We lost a big group of seniors on defense and have to replace a bunch, but feel like we have some athletes to do that… Our goal during 7 on 7 is to find the people who can help us be successful on Friday nights at all positions.” He closed with confidence and optimism, “Overall, we are probably not where we were last year as far as competing in 7 on 7s, but feel like we are way ahead as a team, knowing that when we line up in August, we feel like we can run the football behind the strength of our Offensive Line.”
When a Coach has that ability, the ability to mesh optimism with confidence is says a lot. I call it the Doc Davis trait. I know maybe other coaches had it,have it and will develop it.But isn’t just cool to see and hear it. It reminds you of moments that you don’t even realize were “moments” until way after its effect. You may have been in the stands when Spartanburg went for two against Boiling Springs in the upper state finals last season or you may have watched Clinton Coach Webb and his Red Devils go for it on 4th and long last season. You got to love football to understand these moments. You got to know people to have the confidence,to own the optimism.
The Tradition of Clinton High School Red Devil Football is just that. Tradition.
The Tradition of Spartanburg High School Viking Football is.. Tradition.

The event that was to be held today in Clinton isn’t gonna happen. I am just about positive someone between all these fine schools that were to throw it around a little today, will have those two traits…and most importantly of all. The kids will inherit them..
..They will drink every drop of that confidence and optimism.
